Discover why the UK is the best destination to study for your higher education below.

What Can You Do on a UK Student Visa?

As an international student, you want to do much more than just study. Thankfully, with a UK student visa, you can work alongside your course, whether that is in or out of term time. This includes paid and voluntary work.

What Can’t You Do on a UK Student Visa?

With this visa, you cannot:

  • Claim benefits and pensions
  • Be self-employed or engage in business activity
  • Work in certain jobs, e.g., as an entertainer or professional sportsperson
  • Fill a full-time permanent role unless the conditions in Appendix Student ST 26.6 apply
  • Study at an academy or maintained school

5 Benefits of Studying in the UK

1. World Class Education

The UK is home to some of the best universities in the world. The latest university ranking places several UK universities within the top 50, including Imperial College London, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge and UCL.

Students have access to the latest research and equipment, diverse subject offerings and skilled academics that offer an unrivalled learning experience. There are over 160 universities to choose from, each offering high standards of education.

2. Access to Further Education

When it comes to university, there are always more ways to learn. You may start your UK higher education journey on a foundation or bachelor’s degree, which can progress into a master’s or doctoral degree.

As leaders in education, the UK offers extensive courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, allowing you to specialise in a subject area of your choice. Please note – a UK student visa only applies to one course, and you will need to reapply if you transition to a graduate programme.

3. Diverse Place to Live

10.7 million people (16% of the population) were born outside the UK. With so much diversity, we celebrate a variety of traditions, religions, cuisines and languages as part of life in the UK.

At university, you will make friends with students from all over the world, learning new cultures you may not have come across. The university will also organise dedicated events, clubs, societies and festivities to help you find your community.

4. Part-Time Job Prospects

On a UK student visa, you can work 20 hours per week during term time and full-time outside of term time, e.g., vacations. Many employers offer flexible hours to work alongside your studies, and with additional funds, you can better support your outgoings.

You will also have access to a network of colleagues, mentors and contacts who can open you up to work placements and internships.

5. Career Opportunities After Graduation

After graduating, you will be able to work in the UK with a graduate visa. This visa gives you time to settle and find a job that taps into your skills, experience and interests.

A degree will put you ahead of other candidates and help you gain the experience needed to have a successful career.
